An asphalt shingle roofing system has many layers that most people are not aware of. There is a roofing process that must be followed. It first starts with the roof decking. This is the wood layer of your asphalt shingle roofing system. It functions as a place to nail the rest of the roofing system down.

The picture below shows the roof decking, then the next layer is the leak barrier. We install this layer before the underlayment. The leak barrier is where ice forms and melt during the winter months so it imperative this layer is installed. An experienced asphalt shingle roofing contractor will never skip this step. Doing so will lead to major damages down the road. The wood in this area will rot in the long run if improperly installed. A potential roof failure or expensive emergency roof repairs can be prevented with an experience roofer.

Next is the underlayment layer which serves as a secondary water barrier to the asphalt shingle roofing layer. If your roof has wind or hail damages, this layer will protect your roof from water damages. There are two different types of underlayment. The less durable and expensive option is the paper type. The more durable and costly type is the synthetic underlayment. It’s not as heavy and last longer than the paper underlayment. Synthetic underlayment is the preferred option if you’re looking to maximize your roof’s lifespan.

Last is the ridge vent and ridge cap at the top. It helps your asphalt shingle roofing system last longer by venting out hot attic air in the summer. This will also help reduce your power bill if installed properly.
